New academic session begins, but teachers, students boycott | India News

NEW DELHI: Confusion prevailed on JNU campus on Monday as teacher and student bodies rejected the university administration’s call to resume classes.
The JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) said that there was no question of starting the winter session when virtually no exams were held in the monsoon semester. The administration, in turn, issued a notice to the teachers for not carrying out their duties. As a result, even as all schools opened, there were no classes. JNUSU, too, issued a boycott call.
In the morning, JNUTA members raised slogans against vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, blaming him for the violence that had erupted on the campus on January 5. They alleged that Kumar was involved in several discrepancies and called for his ouster, a demand they again raised at a meeting with MHRD later in the day.
Bikramaditya Choudhary, a teacher, said: “When exams for the monsoon semester have not taken place, how can there be a question of starting the winter session?”
Earlier in the day, the administration came out with an advisory and urged teachers to resume classes in the interest of students. It claimed that 12 deans and seven chairpersons of special centres had appealed to students and teachers to “refrain from any activity that would hinder the conducive atmosphere in the functioning of the university”. However, there was no clarity on the identity of these deans and chairpersons.
Dean of School of International Studies, Ashwini Mohapatra, a member of the breakaway JNU Teachers’ Federation, claimed that classes did not happen even though a few students did turn up. The administration said the appeal was issued after two JNUTA office-bearers announced a “non-cooperation” plan. “The above call for non-cooperation not only goes against the efforts of the administration for restoration of normalcy on campus and resumption of academic activities, but also reflects the intention of JNUTA to disrupt normal functioning of the university (sic),” it said, adding the new semester had begun with registration of more than 5,000 students.
