Why Batgirl Just Got Cancelled?

The real reasons behind WB canning the DC superhero movie. For more awesome content, check out: http://whatculture.com/

Based on the DC Comics superhero Barbara Gordon (Batgirl),

the American superhero movie Batgirl was never released. It was created by Burr! Productions and DC Films for the HBO Max streaming service with the intention of being a part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Leslie Grace played Batgirl in the movie, which was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and featured J. K. Simmons, Jacob Scipio, Brendan Fraser, and Michael Keaton in addition to Christina Hodson’s screenplay.

Joss Whedon started working on the script for a Batgirl feature film in March 2017, but he departed the project a year later.

When the movie’s status as an HBO Max original was officially announced in May 2021, Hodson was hired to write a new script in April 2018 and El Arbi and Fallah were hired to helm. In July of that year, Grace was cast, and the movie was shot in Glasgow, Scotland, from November 2021 to March 2022. The movie was almost finished when DC Films and HBO Max owners Warner Bros. Discovery revealed in August 2022 that they no longer intended to release it because of the studio’s cost-cutting initiatives and a shift to theatrical releases.

A female superhero team-up movie starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn had the potential to include Barbara Gordon/Batgirl from DC Comics in May 2016.

which later evolved into Birds of Prey (2020). Because a standalone movie starring the character was being developed, Batgirl was ultimately cut from the movie. [14] The standalone picture, which was being supervised by Warner Bros. Pictures president Toby Emmerich and DC Films chairman Jon Berg and Geoff Johns, was written, directed, and produced by Joss Whedon. [15] Whedon was supposed to start shooting the movie in 2018[16], but he abandoned it in February because he couldn’t come up with a plot. With Warner Bros. and the newly appointed head of DC Films, Walter Hamada, planning to replace Whedon with a female director at that time,[17] there was also added pressure placed on Whedon as the male director of a movie with a female focus. [18]In April 2018[19],

Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson was brought on to rewrite the script for Batgirl.

She was supposed to start writing the movie after finishing The Flash, another DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie (2023). [20] As part of Hamada’s new strategy for the DCEU, Batgirl was listed as a movie that might be exclusively released on the streaming service HBO Max rather than in theatres in December 2020[21]. It was also listed on DC’s slate of movies that were scheduled to be released in 2022 or 2023 in April 2021. [22] A month later, when it was proven to be the character, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, both of whom had been admirers of the character for a long time[23], were hired to helm the movie.
